CARTONNAGE REGIONALISM IN THE
ATELIERS OF THE FAYUM TERRITORY
CRAFT
PROJECT OVERVIEW

CRAFT stands for Cartonnage Regionalism in the Ateliers of the Fayum Territory and is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Project focused on researching funerary cartonnage from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods of Egyptian history. The project aims to explore the production methods of cartonnage artefacts, including mummy masks, foot-cases, chest covers, and full body coverings, and to determine if there were regional differences in the craftsmanship techniques, iconography, and decorative style. Geographically, CRAFT focuses on the area of the Fayum Oasis and the Western Egyptian Desert.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH
CRAFT has been named Project of the Month in April 2025 by the CORDIS European Commission for its outstanding research results. Read more on this and other Project activities in the Media Reports section.
